budget chair and failed vice presidentialal candidate paul ryan isn't quite what to say about it, but he isn't extend aing bouquet of olive branches. >> when we see an opening, however small we should take it, if we want to promote conservativism, we'll need to use every tool at our disposal. sometimes we will have to reject the president's proposals. that time might come more than once. sometimes we'll have to make them better. >> jonathan martin writes today in politico top gop officials are calling for a more strategic mix of opposition and accommodation. exactly where that accommodation exists remains a mystery. for every suggestion of compromise, there is a doubling down on principle. that, i believe, is how we'll achieve republican renewal. >> as president obama told the new republic this weekend, until republicans feel that there's a real price to pay for them just saying no and being ob strkzist, you'll probably see at least a number of them arguing that we should keep on doing it and facing perhaps another four years of stonewalling opposition. the president may be taking at

says paul ryan's budget even while employing fanciful projections didn't balance the budget until 2040. moving that up by 17 years changes the plausible level from level union corn to level unicorn being ridden by santa claus. your thoughts on that? >> there's a larger point. have republicans -- i'm not suggesting they're not embracing austerity anymore, but there's an acknowledgment here. we're talking about there used to be a time they wanted a balanced budget the year after, next year, the year after. i do think there's been a fundamental shift in appreciation and understanding for how you get an economy going. again, though, to me the bigger question goes back to what you talk about getting your caribeanor. we're going to be living with a series of fiscal cliffs, even if in three months from now we get a debt ceiling raiseded, that will be raised for a year, maybe two. that's all we're going to get, and we'll be in the soup and having the same conversation. >> do you think that's true even if -- i mean, this is a pie in the sky scenario. what if the republicans lose the house

hashed plans for a republican revolution. politico report s speaker john boehner, using paul ryan as his salesman, urged his members to make their stand on the budget and sequesters. jake sherman writes, in roughly 48 hours, the republicans went from defense to offense and retreated to the debt ceiling must be matched by spending cuts. it was the swiftest and most drastic position switch in boehner's speakership. it was not lost on kevin mccarthy who said, "what they'll say after that vote, this is the day of the comeback." maybe if comeback also conotes fractious and uncertain strategy. with no democratic support, the way could go the way of boehner's plan b if just seven republicans break rank. and they still have to contend with the rightward flank. >> you wouldn't believe the number of conservative commentators, hey, you know what, we're going to have to start backing off obama, he's not really a bad guy, not a socialist marxist, he's just a chicago thug. we're becoming isolated on an island here, it's very small. it's a drift out in the middle of nowhere. >> joining us now to di
